FFF/FDM

What does that mean?

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FFF AND FDM?

FFF stands for Fused Filament Fabrication. FDM stands for Fused Deposition Modeling. However, the term FDM was trademarked by the company Stratasys in 1988. Therefore, the processes are identical.

WHICH MATERIALS ARE SUITABLE FOR WHAT?

PLA (Polylactide) is a biodegradable plastic made from renewable raw materials. PLA can be used for almost anything except for items that are exposed to outdoor conditions, as the material decomposes.

PETG (glycol-modified polyester) is just as easy to process and print as PLA, but it is weather-resistant and has the same durability as ABS.

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is the material used for building blocks. ABS is the most commonly used plastic in the industry because it is impact-resistant and highly durable. However, it is less commonly used in 3D printing because it is difficult to print.

HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene) is comparable to ABS but is not weather-resistant. It is used in the 3D printing sector as a soluble support material.

TOLERANCES

The tolerances in the FFF/FDM process are ±0.1 mm. Holes can be produced within an H7 fit range, which means that for a 7 mm hole, the dimensions are 7 - 7.015 mm, resulting in a tolerance of 15 µm.
